In France, freight transport is responsible for 9% of national greenhouse gas emissions (370 billion tonnes-km), 89% of which is carried by road, 9% by rail and 2% by inland waterway. The transport sector needs to evolve in order to reduce its CO₂ emissions by 28% (based on 2019 projections) to achieve its 2030 Low Carbon Strategy objective.
